Catch a “Peak” of Fall
Posted Tuesday, October 14, 2009
Haven’t taken a drive to check out the beautiful fall foliage, yet? Saratoga is still covered in vibrant orange, yellow and red colors, so it is a great time to get your leaf peeping in before it’s gone. You might want to bring your camera, too. The Saratoga National Historical Park (which recently celebrated its 232nd Anniversary of the Battles of Saratoga, known as the “Turning Point in the American Revolution”) was just named one of the top 10 most photogenic parks for fall foliage. A designation awarded by the National Park Foundation, which is an organization that works to bring awareness and connectivity between people and our 391 national parks. This is a great honor and a great way for you and your family to enjoy American History and the outdoors. They are expecting their colors to peak by this weekend and hold through the following week or more. It’s almost “peak” time in Saratoga, plus there is plenty of other fall activities to enjoy.
Get Your Scream On
Posted Thursday, October 8, 2009
Now that the leaves are changing and October is here, Halloween and haunting is on the minds of many. Every Friday and Saturday this month, you can find something to do that is related to Halloween, Haunts or both. With a rich past full of casinos, gambling and structures that date back to the late 1700s, Saratoga has quite a story to tell and some may even say that there are things from the past that are still “present.” You can read all about the haunted places of Saratoga County in numerous books or you can live it on a guided walk. Mason Winfield’s “Haunted History Ghost Walks” will take you through the streets of Saratoga Springs and tell you about the architecture, history, mystery and the things that “live among us.” If “real-life” ghost stories are not to your liking, you can just get scared silly on a farm where by day it is a regular corn maze and by night it is a scare-fest of ghouls, creepy crawlers and all things that go bump in the night. Schuyler Farms and Liberty Ridge Farm have haunted, moonlit corn mazes that are for the older crowd and not for the faint of heart. Ellms Family Farm has Halloween Hayrides alongside their corn maze that are not haunted, plus special moonlit maze nights where the darkness is your biggest fear. If you just want to experience the beauty of fall, Saratoga has that, too.
Old World Traditions
Posted Wednesday, September 30, 2009
Saratoga has a different kind of festival this weekend –one that you might not think of when you mention Saratoga. Everyone knows that you can find horses, rich history and cultural gems when visiting. Saratoga has also been famous for centuries because of our spas and mineral springs. But did you know that the springs that have been enjoyed by the wealthy of yester-year and today’s traveler are the very same springs that hundreds of years ago attracted Native Americans to the area? It is true. Before 1791, the area was known as a fruitful hunting ground of the Iroquois and was called Sarachtogue, which means "hillside of a great river" and "place of the swift water." The Indians used Saratoga's abundant mineral springs for medicinal purposes. Plus, it is well documented that Sir William Johnson, a British soldier and hero of the French and Indian Wars, had Native American friends who brought him to the High Rock Spring so the waters could help heal his war wounds. To celebrate the culture of the Northeast's Native American heritage, Saratoga hosts a two-day festival full of traditional dancing, storytelling, music, demonstrations, children's activities, plus native foods, arts, crafts and jewelry. The Saratoga Native American Festival will be held on October 3rd & 4th from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. both days, in the Saratoga Spa State Park on the grounds of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. There will be learning and fun for the entire family.

Saratoga’s motto is “Health, History and Horses”. This weekend is the perfect time to relive history while in Saratoga. The Saratoga National Historical Park will have a two-day event marking the 232nd Anniversary of the Battles of Saratoga, which have been noted and recognized by many historians as “The Turning Point in the American Revolution”. This Saturday and Sunday (19 & 20th), the Park will be transformed into a scene from 1777, with British, American and German soldier encampments and reenactments. You can bring your family and friends to experience what life was like centuries ago, with campfires, musket fire, strategy planning, demonstrations and so much more. Or you can join the Living History Civil War Encampment in the historic Congress Park in downtown Saratoga Springs. Re-enactors will relive life during war time, with camp, drill, demonstrations, full cavalry unit with horses, displays and more. Both events are not only educational and fun, they are FREE, too! There is plenty of history to be found throughout Saratoga and Saratoga County, with state and national museums, historical sites and other events, such as the Explore Charlton Weekend this Saturday and Sunday. "Roundup" the Family for Maritime Fun
Posted Wednesday, September 9, 2009
If you are looking for something the whole family can enjoy this weekend, head to Saratoga! An event for the young and young at heart, the 11th Annual Waterford Tugboat Roundup has entertainment and learning fun. Southern Saratoga County is full of maritime history and this event is a celebration of days gone by. Waterford is small town situated at the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers and in turn the junction of the Champlain and Erie Canals. It is also home to the highest set of lift locks in the world, known as the “Waterford Flight.” This Friday through Sunday (Sept 11-13), the Waterford Harbor will be transformed into a scene from the early 1900s, as tugs old and new line the canal way. Plus, live music, entertainment, a tugboat parade, games, venders, exhibits, boat tours and rides, fireworks and more. It is a great way to learn about a different part of Saratoga and New York State history and take part in a fun experience for all.

Saratoga is All for the Ladies
Posted Friday, September 4, 2009
It is being dubbed “The Rachel Alexandra Show” as the streets of Saratoga are lined with Rachel banners and Saratoga Springs Mayor has declared September 5th, Rachel Alexandra Day. By far the top filly today and being compared to the likes of Ruffian, Rachel Alexandra is ready to put on a show this Saturday, September 5th with the older boys. Everyone is talking about it and for good reason. If she wins, she will re-write the history books – just like she has in some of her past starts. She is on an eight race win streak going into Saturday’s 56th running of The Woodard Stakes (GI), with a purse upped to $750,000 from $500,000 when her entry was confirmed. A filly or mare has never won this race in its history. The last 3-year-old filly to win a race of this kind was Lady Primrose in 1887. The day will be one for the ladies of all ages. All women and girls can enjoy a buffet in the Paddock Tent and At the Rail Pavilion for half price. There will be pink Rachel T-shirts and hats for sale at the track with net proceeds to benefit the Susan B. Komen Race For the Cure. Plus, the first 25,000 fans will receive a commemorative Rachel Alexandra button. Gates will open early, at 7:00 a.m. with the featured Woodward going off at approximately 5:52 p.m. and followed by The Forego (GI). Saratoga is full of history and could be part of history again this weekend. Come to Saratoga this Labor Day Weekend and check out “The Rachel Alexandra Show.”

It is Final Stretch and there are fun festivals, entertainment and great activities for the whole family. If you want to hear live music from all genres – rock to blues, hip hop to jazz and more – then you will enjoy the Final Stretch Music Festival. Plus, this is the final weekend (ends Labor Day) of world-class thoroughbred racing at the Saratoga Race Course for the 2009 season. Saturday, September 5th is highlighted by two Grade I stakes races: The Woodward $750,000 and The Forego $300,000. The Woodward will star the top contender for horse-of-the-year, Rachel Alexandra, as she attempts to beat the boys and make history with a win. Sunday at the track will feature the final giveaway (winter cap), The Spinaway (GI) and the start of Family Fun Fest. The two-day festival will have pony rides, inflatables, clowns, caricatures and other children’s activities in the backyard from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday and 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Labor Day Week is Heating Up
Posted Wednesday, September 2, 2009
If you haven’t heard, the Labor Day Celebration isn’t just a long weekend in Saratoga - it is a full week of great deals on lodging and meals, plus fun festivals and top-notch thoroughbred racing! Thousand-Dollar Thursday (9/3) is one way that Saratoga is thanking the best racing fans around. All paid track patrons have the chance to win a $1,000 pari-mutuel wagering voucher to be used during the final days of the 2009 meet. Plus, Friday (9/4) is the last “Party at the Park” with twilight racing, live music and food, as well as College Day, where students with valid ID get free grandstand admission. All of this leading up to what could be the greatest moment of Saratoga Race Course's race season, when the Super Filly Rachel Alexandra tries to beat the older males on Saturday, September 5th in The Woodward Stakes (GI). History is waiting to be made as a filly or mare has never won the Woodward in its previous 55 years. Even better, the National Museum of Racing & Hall of Fame has researched and found that a filly hasn’t won a Grade I unrestricted dirt route race in New York since its inception of grading races in 1973 and the last recorded win by a 3-year-old filly in a major unrestricted GI New York dirt route race was in 1887 by Lady Primrose. This is a moment not to be missed! The weekend also promises fun and entertainment with the Final Stretch Music Festival, Family Fun Fest and Labor Day BBQ. Make your way to Saratoga for the biggest weekend of the summer!
